Red Light vs Near-Infrared Light: What’s the Difference?
Red light and near-infrared light are neighbouring parts of the light spectrum, but they are not identical. Red light is visible to the human eye, while near-infrared light sits just beyond visible red. Wellness devices may use one or both, and the exact wavelength should always be stated.
What is red light?
Red light is visible light commonly used in photobiomodulation research and consumer light-based wellness products. Lifinity products use product-specific wavelengths; selected devices use 660 nm red light.
What is near-infrared light?
Near-infrared light is invisible to the human eye and has a longer wavelength than visible red light. Selected Lifinity recovery products use 850 nm or 880 nm near-infrared light, depending on the model.
Why do wavelengths matter?
A wavelength is the distance between successive peaks of a light wave, measured in nanometres (nm). Different wavelengths interact with tissue differently. However, wavelength alone does not determine a device’s performance: irradiance, dose, treatment time, distance from the skin, coverage and consistency of use also matter.
Red light vs near-infrared: the practical difference
- Visibility: red light is visible; near-infrared is generally not.
- Wavelength: near-infrared uses longer wavelengths than red light.
- Product design: some devices use a single wavelength, while others combine several wavelengths.
- Evidence: research findings depend on the exact device, dose and population studied and should not be generalised to every consumer product.
How to compare a light-based wellness device
Look for a named wavelength, clear session instructions, comfortable fit, coverage of the intended area, safety guidance and a transparent explanation of what the product is designed to do. Be cautious of products that rely on broad claims without publishing meaningful specifications.
