850 nm Near-Infrared Face Masks: What Does 850 nm Mean?

850 nm is a near-infrared wavelength commonly used alongside visible red light in LED wellness devices. The number 850 describes the wavelength in nanometres. Because 850 nm sits beyond the visible red portion of the spectrum, you generally cannot see the near-infrared light itself.

A nanometre, abbreviated nm, is a unit used to describe wavelength. Visible colours occupy different wavelength ranges, while near-infrared begins beyond visible red. Can you see 850 nm near-infrared light?
